JAZZ FESTIVAL
Auditions are February 16th
at Falmouth H.S. There are
opportunities for more trumpets and trombones to audition. Please email Tom Borning to add
students.
The festival is March 30th
and 31st.
The concert is March 31st
at Harwich H.S. Sandwich, D-Y, and
Nauset Jazz Bands will perform.
Paul Pitts is the
conductor.
SPECIAL GUEST
Rose Richards introduced Lew
Taylor from the Cape Cod Celtic Society.
The primary objective of the Cape Cod Celtic Society is to raise money
for music programs in Cape Cod schools.
They raise money through concerts and there are three concerts planned
this year. They also sponsor music
and song workshops.
Rose will act as liaison
between the Cape Cod Celtic Society and the CCMEA.
AUDITIONS
Chris reports that both
Vickie and her students did a great job at the auditions last November. There were some students that drove
themselves to auditions. Chris
sent them home and told them to return with at parent. Please make sure that your students
come with an adult.
Marcia wanted to let people
know that it is difficult to get two choral judges per room. There was a lot of discussion between
the judges and the auditions took too long.
Bob Frazier said that
students were not prepared for the sight reading part of the audition. Fred Johnson stated that the altos had
difficulty with the range of the sight-reading.
There was a motion from
Allison Beavan that the choral directors meet separately to discuss the choral
auditions, including the sight-reading and present a proposal at the June
meeting. Lisa Fournier-Donley seconded the motion. MSP
JUNIOR FESTIVALS
Band- Mariellen Sears will host at Nauset Middle
School. The workshop is Wednesday
February 16th.
Orchestra- Kerry Wynn will host the String Jamboree at
Mattacheese Middle School on March 23rd.
Chorus- Sarah Fachada will host the choral workshop at Cape
Cod Academy on April 12th.
Junior Jazz- There is no host yet. John New will check on the availability at Mattacheese
Middle School.
PUBLICITY
The Cape Cod Times was at the
festival taking pictures. Radio
stations were sent press releases but no one has heard any announcements. Chris suggests that we revisit
publicity and will put it on the agenda for the June meeting.
OLD BUSINESS
None
NEW BUSINESS
John New bought up the cost
of choral music ($1,100) for the festival. John suggests that one of the pieces come from the pieces
that the CCMEA already own. Chris
suggests that it is also possible to us the SE District library for music. We'll try to get a list together for
conductors so that the cost can be reduced.
Lisa Fournier-Donley has
concerns about the double reeds that audition in the saxophone room. Would it be possible for the double
reed players to be auditioned by a double reed player?
John New made a motion to
include a double reed judge for next year's auditions. If a double reed judge is unavailable
the double reeds will be placed in reed room with the least number of students
auditioning. Alex Pendleton seconded the motion. MSP
Bob Frazier expressed concern
about an article titled "Better Playing Through Chemistry" that
appeared in the New York Times.
The article focused on professional musicians who are using beta
blockers to play better in stressful situations. Bob is concerned that if
professionals do it that the kids will follow.
Thanks to the festival hosts
for a great job and for those who provided housing.
