JUNIOR FESTIVAL REPORTS

2/14/01 Band reportedly went well. Next year: 2/13/02 HOST NEEDED!

4/10/01 Chorus went well also. Next year: 4/10/02 Host: Falmouth

3/21/01 Orchestra went well also. Next year: 3/20/02 Marstons Mills

Fred reported receiving a call from Luann Angeloni about general music at
Marstons Mills. There is another director as well as Luann, but her group
is non-credit. She wanted clarification whose students could attend.
All-Cape bylaws state that festivals are only for those students enrolled in
credited ensembles. Fred sent a letter to the school's principal stating
same. Tom Faris (Nauset) continued the discussion saying the same issue was
a problem there. He requested Fred send a letter to Nauset's principal for
clarification and support.

JAZZ FESTIVAL
3/30/01 Nauset, Tom Faris, host. Ned Rosenblatt,Manager.
Festival went well. Only three schools sent students to the auditions.
Both Tom and Ned wish there had been more. Students selected fielded a
good band, but audience was small. Tom Faris offered to host again, but not
manage. Next year's date to be set in the fall.

BARNSTABLE SCHOOLS BUDGET
Ira reports grades 3-8 instrumental has been cut. Arbitration is
continuing regarding remaining positions. Superintendent does NOT want
instrumental teachers going over to general music and the contract won't
allow it. There also is question whether or not teachers can switch levels.
The Band Boosters are trying to raise funds, but it's a great deal of
money. Officially the cut is mandatory and any funding must now be from an
outside source. Currently the Barnstable teachers are awaiting the
adjudicator's decision which will be final and binding. The deadline is
June 18, 2001.
Allison reported her choruses wished to raise funds but were
discouraged from doing so by high school principal. They wrote individual
letters to the Barnstable students (delivered to Ira) offering to help in
Barnstable's fund raising events.
Fred suggested sending a letter stating our thoughts to the
Superintendent and a Letter to the Editor of the Cape Cod Times. Marcia
suggested purchasing an ad as well. All agreed it should remain positive
about Music Ed and not focus on the negative. Bob suggested Fred contact
MENC for guidance, John Malman in particular.

AUDITIONS
11/17/01 at Falmouth High School. Procedures remain the same except
there will be 2 soprano rooms and 2 alto rooms each with 2 adjudicators, 1
tenor room and 1 bass room each with 1 adjudicator. Anyone willing to
adjudicate should let Fred know. It was suggested that elementary school
teachers might like to adjudicate.
Fred stated he will try to move louder instrumental rooms away from
vocals and quieter instrumentals. Any abridgement of audition pieces will
be done in the fall.
Audition fee is $5.00/student and Festival fee is $18.00/student. Joe
has redone the registration website. Each school will be listed with it's
own link for registration.

FESTIVAL 2002
1/31-2/3/02 Barnstable High School. Thursday: 3-8:30PM
Friday: 8:45-3PM
Band: LaVada Studley, Conductor: Vinnie Macrina
Chorus: Vickie Vieira, Conductor: Gerald Mack???
Orchestra: Ira Schaefer, Conductor: Pat Smith (Berj
and Ira are reviewing 3 programs Pat sent)
Allison reported that the Pops in the Park (Orleans) scholarship
committee is very interested in supporting our festival financially. They
have requested an expense accounting and will get back to us after they have
reviewed it.

FESTIVAL RECORDINGS
Discussion regarding where profits should go with the association
wanting to make sure that the recording company was not receiving the
majority of profits. Allison presented a proposal from Pierre Paquin who
records for the Chatham Chorale. This discussion was tabled till fall.

FESTIVAL STIPENDS
Also tabled till fall was discussion whether the festival host should
receive a stipend since the audition host does. A stipend of $400 was
suggested as minimum since it's more than a 2 day festival and auditions are
only on 1 day.

PRINTING
Also tabled till fall hoping to research a cheaper printer. We would
like to receive estimates on 1,000 programs since the BHS auditorium seats
1300. Robert suggested that we allow one per family to cut down on the
cost.

CAPE SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA
Fred reported that Eric Borenstein is happy to go into the high
schools. The symphony wants the school to tell them what they want from the
symphony and they will tailor the program in that direction. He will attend
our fall meeting to help clarify the program.
