Request for schools festival payments. Cape Cod Opera money now deposited and Fred Johnson reimbursed for newspaper ad.
President's Report:
Thank you to all festival managers and hosts, and thank you to Joe Studley for all his help on the web site and auditions.
Students should be better prepared musically for festivals. If student misses a bus to rehearsals, he/she may NOT drive themselves. Please inform your students. That student will be sent home.
Chorus sounds great this year but the students need to be better readers. We need to train them as musicians.
2002 FESTIVAL REPORTS
Host Report: Tony Stevens
No problems at all, running well. Barnstable will host next two years unless someone else would like to host. Friday night dinner is an annual event and was very nice last evening.
Chorus Report: Vickie Vieira
Conductor Dr. Daniel Gordon was surprised students were not better prepared. He has done many many festivals and relates well to high school students. He does expect better musicians and feels they are growing this weekend. He has spent much time working on vowels and all aspects of the sound have improved. Students are well behaved and polite.
Band Report: LaVada Studley
Great students - prompt to rehearsals. Conductor feels the soul of the music is most important.
He feels students are focused and working on technique. Thanks everyone for their help and states there are no problems.
Orchestra Report: Berj Hagopian
Everything is going well - conductor Pat Smith is wonderful. All are in attendance.
FESTIVAL 2003
Recent Parent Issue:
A student who is schooled privately off-Cape but a resident of Falmouth feels that as a taxpayer in Falmouth they should be allowed to participate in the All-Cape festival. President Johnson wrote letter stating that our by-laws mandate the student be in good standing of a member school's ensemble.
Bonnie Bearse requested that CCMEA by-law's be sent to all
schools and directors.
Fred Johnson reminded that each school/director needs to make
eligibility decisions regarding Sr. District and All-State festivals. Also, if
a student misses the All-Cape festival after auditioning, they will
be ineligible to audition for the following year's festival, unless
that student was ill or had a death in the family.
That is why the commitment for is included on the registration
for each student. A letter must be sent to the
President of All-Cape to have the student reinstated as eligible for
the following year.
LaVada Studley reminded that Sr. District will accept a letter
of excuse from a director, but then the Executive Board of the
District decides whether or not the student will be reinstated.
Festival Schedule:
President Johnson feels it should remain the same.
Barbara Elder brought up difficulty of housing Nantucket and
Martha's Vineyard students, especially for liability reasons. Housing would be easier if it were for both nights
and in the same town. There
was extensive group discussion regarding Friday night events being
planned to keep the housed students entertained.
General concensus disagreed because of sports conflicts. It was strongly suggested that the housed students
have a required parent waiver regarding liability. A committee was formed to look into the issue:
Chris Roberts, Eric Wendelken, Barbara Elder, Janis Wightman
and Tony Stevens.
Concert Dress Code:
Managers should send out the required dress information in the
festival packet sent to each student.
Festival Finance Troubles:
President Johnson suggested that audition results would be
formulated the same night as the audition that all managers would
mail audition results in one packet per school.
In addition the results would be posted the next day on the
web site. This packet should include: Bill, Dress and other
information.
2003 Festival Managers:
Band - John New, Alex Pendleton
Chorus - Linda Squire, Allison Beavan
Orchestra - Kerry Wynn, Stacey Faris
Music Mailings:
President Johnson suggests that the June meeting should decide
who the conductors will be - managers should bring two names.
The September meeting would then decide what the programs will
be and publishers called immediately regarding "out of print/in
print" issues and orders should be placed.
That would allow the music to be sent out with the audition
results the day after the auditions.
It was asked by Rosemarie Richard if each director could be
ordered a packet. After discussion it was
decided that each school should order their own due to cost.
A discussion followed regarding Xeroxed music. President Johnson reminded all that we do not
support copying music and that the ASCAP rules will be mailed to
members along with the All-Cape by-laws.
Auditions:
All audition pieces will be South East District pieces except
for the flutes who may choose the Junior District piece with points
off. Sr. District will be
eliminating the choral piece "My Love is Like a Red Red Rose." We will need to wait and see
what the new piece will be.
A motion was made by Vickie Vieira that a simple 5 point
sightreading component to the choral audition be put in place.
M/S/P Vickie will
collect sample sightreadings for selection at the September meeting.
